Politics, gambling, and alcohol ads will no longer be displayed on YouTube’s Top Banner

YouTube has announced that going forward, ads suggestive of politics, election, gambling, alcohol, prescription drugs will no longer be displayed on its masthead – the top banner of its website and apps. This arguably is the most prominent ad spot on its homepage.

According to CNN Business, Youtube’s parent company, Google, said; “We believe this update will build on changes we made last year to the masthead reservation process and will lead to a better experience for users,”

Due to its approach to misinformation and hate speech, YouTube’s policies have in recent years been under close scrutiny. Last year, its video service joined the likes of Facebook and Twitter to opt for an outside audit of its policies against harmful content.

This marks the second major change in about six months from YouTube. The company had in November banned advertisers from retaining the spot (masthead) for a full day.
